e-Installation Virtual Space (KIT/ZAK/ZKM Karlsruhe)

Jennifer McClelland supported the development of preserving media art in the form of e-Installations during a practicum of her studies as a computer scientist and with her diploma thesis. Both were achieved in cooperative work with the ISAS (KIT), the ZAK, the ZKM and media artist Marc Lee.

ISAS-ZAK-ZKM-Praktikum reenacting a media artwork Versailles Fountain (1993) by Nam June Paik: Under the supervision of ZAK and ISAS, computer science students of the KIT digitized the video sculpture Versailles Fountain (1993) by Nam June Paik, located in the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, and transferred it to a telepresence environment. This practical course, supported by the ZKM, represented the beginning of the ZAK-ISAS project „e-Installation“ for documentation of media art installations.

ISAS-ZAK-ZKM-Praktikum reenacting a media artwork: 10.000 moving cities – same but different (2013) by Marc Lee

In the summer semester of 2014, the artwork 10.000 moving cities – same but different (2013) by the Swedish artist Marc Lee will be virtualized.

This media art installation will be captured, digitized and reenacted as an e-Installation. Given that the work of the Swedish artist Marc Lee is an net-based installation, two approaches are planned: a telepresent version in real-time, and an additional version for offline documentation.

Diploma thesis by Jennifer McClelland: Development of a man-machine interface for e-installation to 10,000 Moving Cities – Same but Different (2013) by Marc Lee

As part of the project e-Installation, the computer science student Jennifer McClelland has developed a interface to human-machine interaction (MMI) in virtual media art installations. The thesis was supervised by Florian Faion (ISAS), Antonio Zea (ISAS) and Jesús Muñoz Morcillo (ZAK). Mrs. McClelland tested different input devices and display possibilities in the virtual environment of the artwork of Marc Lee “10.000 moving cities – same but different”. As a MMI for the interaction with the virtual reality, a wireless handheld mouse with trackball is used, whose functionality can be extrapolated to similar works of art.
